My only criticism is, the book fails mention the accomplishments of Canadian Jazz musicians during the 1920’s and onward, and this is truly disappointing, given that the book was written in Canada, and published in Canada.

There is a feeling of being in a lecture hall, when reading the contents of this book. The book itself focuses on the impact of Jazz musicians and their recordings, beginning with Louis Armstrong, and ending with Walt Dickerson. The back of the book summarizes Trevor Tolley’s passion for record collecting, having started in Great Britain in 1942, and gives us a concise history of his background as a jazz discographer, and his other accomplishments as a leading authority on British literary history of the twentieth century. His book is a collection of these essays, past and present, previously delivered to the C.C.C. I had heard Trevor give excellent lectures on Jazz at the Canadian Collector’s Congress. When I was first contacted by Professor Tolley to review his new book, I readily agreed. Later he worked with such jazz musicians as Slim Gaillard, Wingy Manone, Eddie Condon, Nappy Lamare, Art Hodes, Oran “Hot Lips” Page, and Max Kaminsky. In 1943, he moved to Los Angeles, California, where he led his own band, played for motion pictures, and was featured on Orson Welles‘ radio shows. He returned to New York in 1937, working with Mezz Mezzrow and Sidney Bechet. He also played in the band backing Bill Robinson. In addition to Armstrong, in New York Singleton played with Bubber Miley, Tommy Ladnier, Fats Waller, Jelly Roll Morton and Otto Hardwick. In 1929 he moved with Armstrong to New York City. In 19, he performed on landmark recordings with Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five. In Chicago, Singleton played with Doc Cooke, Dave Peyton, Jimmie Noone, and theater bands, then joined Louis Armstrong‘s band with Earl Hines. Louis, Missouri to play in Charlie Creath‘s band, then moved to Chicago, Illinois. After returning to New Orleans he worked with such bands as those of Papa Celestin, Big Eye Louis Nelson, John Robichaux, and Fate Marable. He served with the United States Navy in World War I. He was working professionally with Steve Lewis by 1915. Singleton was born in Bunkie, Louisiana and raised in New Orleans. Along with Jimmy Harrison and Jack Teagarden, Higginbotham contributed to the acceptance of the trombone in jazz music as a melodically capable instrument. His strong, raucous sound on the trombone and wild outbreaks on stage were characteristic. Higginbotham was considered to be the most vital of the swing trombone players. He went on his first European tour with Sammy Price, appearing in Scandinavia, and worked once again briefly in 1964 with Louis Armstrong. Musicians included Henry Allen, Higgenbotham, Charlie Holmes, Luis Russell, Will Hognson, Pops Foster and Paul Barbarin, all member of Russell’s band. Higgenbotham and His Six Hicks was issued on OKeh 8772, featuring “Give Me Your Telephone Number” and “Higgenbotham Blues”.

He also appeared on the DuMont series Jazz Party (1958), aired on WNTA-TV.ĭuring the tenure with Luis Russell, on February 5, 1930, a single session was issued under the name of J.C. Higginbotham led several bands in the Fifties in Boston and Cleveland, appeared regularly at the Metropole in New York between 19, and led his own Dixieland band there in the Sixties. He played for a long period in the forties with his ideal partner Red Allen, and then disappeared from the scene for several years. He recorded extensively both as a sideman and as a leader.
